Normally I try to bring you outside of the box ideas, products, tendencies or simple thoughts. For this warm August post I decided to offer you a bit of the summer mood.
While this part of the world rests, on the other side of the globe there are some very active minds reproducing with “minor” adjustments what seems to be unthinkable around here. I explain.
China is growing well while the rest of the world spins 200kms with economic and identity crisis. The strong capacities of the Chinese producing in large scale in no secret, but to reproduce very bizarre products and business concepts is a common tendency around the rising sun.
From cars, to soft drinks, to mobile phones to entire villages. This a very hot topic for copyright or creative commons, but doesn’t seem to bother or stop the success of these “new” products in China and neighbouring countries.
In my opinion, they are doing the exact same thing that has been done in mature economies. I believe the major difference with companies around here are based in many aspects that qualify what is offered. For that all enterprises tend to create different names, design, logos, branding, strategies, targets and use different distribution channels among many other decisions that while help to differentiate and succeed. For example Coca- Cola vs Pepsi, Nike vs Adidas, Macdonals vs Burger King etc etc.
What seems to be a big handicap from Chinese corporate strategy is not evolving with the know how they have right now and the financial strength to create something really new and remarkable.
I leave some examples of direct competition global companies are facing in China. Who had the idea that China is a sea of roses; by now understand that there might also be some spikes to remove.

My favourite is the iOrgane!!!

Dance to the rhythm August 7, 2009

This post fits like a glove with the summer season and marries well with the previous post of Where the Hell is Matt.
I believe that is as clear as water that consumers and users of the web are the ones holding the very pure creativity and the fire starter for viral videos. This wedding video amazes me for 3 reasons: breaking with the traditional entrances, how a small network of people can generate 14million views and manage to “credit” the career of Chris Brown.
The concept of the idea is easy – I want our wedding to be different. In the big number of people weddings, the organizers (couple) tend to spend ridiculous resources to make a ceremony unique.
Well this couple and their friends managed to create the proper relax mood, smiles and very important a remarkable experience for those present at the wedding or us that watched the video. How many creative’s wish to drink from this naïfness and generate the hard online buzz!
Chris Brown case, after the Rihana story that work as a huge downturn to the male singer, this very simple wedding celebrated generated a high demand for mp3’s in iTunes and Amazon. On top of that imagine the number of wedding playing this song!!! To conclude Chris Brown was saved by the wed(b).

This 2nd video is all that we wish in a typical summer: dance, music, adventure and unexpected situations.
This is how someone like Matt can invite others to be part and create an large scale dance floor. What strikes me is this video is that we live in the era of online social platforms but the growing movements of people getting together and crabbing the moment is growing also in the offline and face to face version, like in this case.
Imagine this guy could be the Matt version for summer music festivals, creating choreographies for the bands playing, selling his merchandise, energy drinks and placing more of these videos online! Going to purpose to be the agent.

These two examples are clear evidences that users and consumers are starting to change their normal habitus of being confined on doing what there are supposed/told to do, to the mutation of doing what makes me happy.

Where the Hell is Matt? July 28, 2009

Simplicity. This is definitely an easy word to describe the project of Where the Hell is Matt. The growing movement of people embracing the travels and good vibe that Matt’s dance transmits translate on the more than 30 million visits on his website.
To shortly explain the history, Matt decided one day to travel around the world and to colour the typical photos/videos tourists massively like to produce. He decided to create a weird dance. Made a compilation of dances in several places, upload in Youtube and the word got spread has the guy with the weird dance. Simple and easy.
Matt is already on his 3rd trip around the world adding each time something different and inviting other dancers in is videos. This 32 year old American solely occupation is to travel around the world and spread good mood. I couldn’t be more envious for this job. He has the support from Google Earth to easily track is global positioning and a bubble gum company sponsors his plain tickets and all the logistics.
The point I am trying to generate is the huge potential this 1 guy can add to the number of followers he has attracted over the years. Imagine from touristic guide books, local and national touristic public/private institutions, travelling clothing, online media platforms (facebook, twitter, youtube), digital recording audio/video/image equipment, multinational food chains, et etc etc. Currently he lives with his girlfriend imagine a dipper sponsor if a new baby arrives. Matt is no longer a name, is a trademark, which has huge potential than can easily be associated with many products and causes.
To demonstrate a bit better I leave you with the 1st video on a lecture on how he gets the structure and able to add diversity on each travel. Is fast and simple, very different from the 30minute plus presentations full of complicated words, slides or poor of content.
Now you get my point of Simplicity. I leave a nice sentence I heard in the other day: “Do what you love and you will never have to work again”!
Let us wait for his 4th trip around the world.

These days writing computer fonts seem to be hot (check Toyota IQ post)! Microsoft seems to have been changing wisely their somehow conservative look on their Microsoft Office and operative system.
This will not be a post about the “open” battle Microsoft vs Mac, instead is a proof that the new Microsoft 2010 will be one of many Marketing strategies to capture new users, turning daily to open sources software’s.
Remember the “never” helpful Clippy? Well was buried and now a tease documentary is on to make you at least revive the memory of an old tool that make our lives sometimes miserable.
Miscrosoft, in Tututa, opinion gains extra points on proofing that is capable of innovating and still be a reliable player in an industry that changes every second. Watch out Google, Apple, Yahoo, Open Sources and many others, Mr Bill Gates is still working hard behind the scenes.

To promote the new Toyota IQ, the Japanese car company decided to give an original and personal signature to this petite compact car.
IQ (Intelligence Quotient) fits like a glove on this car, due to the features the future cars should have in order to respond to a new demand of tendencies, consummers are asking for: low fuel consumption, safety, quality, design and very need charisma.
Combining the previous remarks of IQ, the creative decided to create a font that adds up the uniqueness of this car. Any of us can download the font and use it for any purpose. So if you are tired of Times New Roman, Arial or Helvetica I leave you the motto: Format – Font – IQ – nr 10
Leave you the makinnnn off.

Central Musical vs Fabchannel July 19, 2009

19.07.09

Until a few months ago we could check what was going down in Paradiso regarding live performance from bands from all over the world, dj’s and even air guitar shows. Unfortunately, due to some financial problems and re-thinking of the corporate strategy change – FABCHANNEL – and to come to an end.

Because TUTUTA is always looking for that “perfect” online musical platform for music+video, I came across with this one very similar to the Dutch one in Portugal. CENTRAL MUSICAL (CM) dedicates to broadcast a variety of live performances of Portuguese and International artists in Luso soil. So far the results have been above expectations: audience growth, content diversity, joint venture, and internationalization (Spain and UK) and financial revenues. Nokia, Optimus mobile operator, national radios and festivals are some the enterprises that decided to support and become partners of this successful start up.

Another great feature of CM is the possibility watching in live stream in real time concerts, interviews, performances from a certain event. This is something that even the traditional media channels are not yet able to provide abundantly. Because we are talking about online broadcast, you can share your experiences with other usual suspect social platforms Flickr, Facebook, Twiter or WordPress. Whether you were there or not!!!

We all understand that the challenges music industry is facing are numerous with shrinking sales on musical albums sales, illegal downloads, and merchandising. CM is a great alternative for recorded labels to integrate and promote artists, generate online content quality, outsource the broadcoast expertise, cover a large geographical territory.

The Netherlands has amazing artists (national + international) all year round in copious number of places and events that could help to create something similar to Fabchannel. As a music lover the physical barrier disable me to be presence in many events, these platforms definitely assist us to overcome that barrier of watching our favourite artist or discovering new ones.
I would like to share with you some of the best exports bands from Portugal at this time: Deolinda

Ebay wicked sick BMX July 17, 2009

All of us have visited Ebay or a local online biding site like Marktplaats to search, place or discover that bargain that you were probably not really looking for. I decided to bring you a good example how you can re-center that approach and become a true Marketer.

Two Aussies decided to blend a lot of creativity and come up with an innovative way of making a bargain a good revenue. For that they observed the simple and direct way the gross majority of the people place their offers, crossed with nr of bids result, product examination, other variables and finally the selling price.

They decided to go beyond and come to a decision to create that remarkable experience many (99% of auction users) seem not to include to the special products, objects or simple things that their care about. These guys were able to create that magic story, an aura and the teasing appeal to capture the web community interest of making the guys at least $100 richer.

This is a clear example on times like these large Mkt company budgets, could reflect on the money allocated on the stereotypical advertising methods/projects. There are several new tools we can use in our favour to enhance the power of communication. Just have to stop a bit, reflect and allocate the right ideas in the right direction.

Ebay is the leading online auction platform for the same reason. They had a small idea with an immense Vision. They were able from pennys to make millions. Basically they offer a common citizen the possibility to share a possession and trade the way they want, making them feeling special in a worldwide dimension and living the experience of having their own miiiiiicro company.

Are you already one?
